San Sepolcro – Crypt of Leonardo

After more than 50 years the Crypt of Leonardo has opened again. It is one of the oldest underground Churches of Milan: realized around the XI century, it was the original center of the city (where the cardo crosses the decumano). It was also used as a tomb for important milanese families and prelates.

Visiting it is a great opportunity to discover a breathtaking part of Milan:  the floor dates back to the roman period and XI century frescoes are painted on the walls. Traces of both the Crypt of Leonardo and of the Church over it can be found in Leonardo da Vinci's drawings.

The Crypt of Leonardo is located on the back of Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, where Leonardo Da Vinci's Codex Atlanticus can be seen. The main entrance of the Crypt is in Piazza San Sepolcro, at right side of the Church.
